You are no longer allowed to use opera house nets in any waters in the ACT. Opera house nets have been illegal in public waters in the ACT for many years, but they are now illegal in private waters as well. Banning the nets across all ACT waters is a key part of the efforts to stop the drowning deaths of native aquatic animals like platypus and rakali in these nets.
The ACT Government is running a yabby swap program to encourage recreational anglers in the community to swap opera house nets for a new wildlife friendly open top pyramid net.
Opera house nets may unintentionally trap air breathing aquatic animals, such as platypus, rakali and turtles, causing them to drown.
To take part in the net exchange, just take your opera house net to any of the retailers listed below. Please note there is a limit of two nets per person.
