Over the past month, the ACT Government has been trialing different engagement methods to inform the ACT Planning Review. To better understand locals’ values, priorities and aspirations about their district’s future, the Government met for consultations with the Inner South community in Manuka and Kingston.

Throughout the consultations, community members highlighted that stories of Canberra’s history as the nation’s capital emerge through the district’s buildings, streetscapes, institutions, people, urban hubs and natural spaces. As such, residents emphasised the need to protect the unique heritage and character of the Inner South by ensuring the diversity and balance between historic and contemporary buildings is maintained.

While participants noted that shared values exist across Canberra, the city’s strengths also lie within the unique aspects of its districts. Participants valued the Inner South’s sense of openness and greenery derived from its wide tree-lined streets, established parks, sizeable blocks, open public spaces and proximity to Lake Burley Griffin, Parliament House and natural landmarks. Additionally, the connectivity between the area’s commercial hubs, cultural institutions and residential areas was highly valued yet could be improved upon in the views of community members.

During discussions, the community also voiced concerns over the need to ensure the future of the district is sustainable, energy efficient and climate resilient.

In the coming months, the ACT Government will be broadening its engagement across Canberra to hear from other communities about what makes their districts unique.
