A new neighbourhood is taking shape in Canberra's north-west. Ginninderra East is a future suburb in Canberra's north-west on approximately 240 hectares of land bounded by the Barton Highway, Palmerville Heritage Park, Kuringa Drive and Owen Dixon Drive.

Located on former CSIRO agricultural land between Belconnen and Gungahlin, Ginninderra East may include approximately 3,000 new homes, providing greater housing choice in an established and well-connected part of Canberra. Around 15 per cent of homes will be delivered as affordable housing (including community and public housing). It will also provide services such as a school, ovals, commercial and community facilities, parks and places for recreation. The area will include a nature reserve, to be conserved alongside the future neighbourhood.

Your feedback will help inform the preparation of the Ginninderra East Major Plan Amendment, which will establish the statutory planning framework for the future suburb. Feedback will also help shape a Place Ambition for Ginninderra East and guide subsequent planning and design.

If you could include just one thing in Ginninderra East that would make it a truly great place to live or visit, what would it be?

Ginninderra East is located on former CSIRO land that was previously used for agricultural research.

The ACT Government acquired Ginninderra East in July 2026. The site had been earmarked for future urban development for several years, and is outlined in the Belconnen District Strategy 2023.

Suburban Land Agency (SLA) is undertaking planning and design work in order to submit a Major Plan Amendment (MPA) in mid 2027.

The concept design of the future community at Ginninderra East will respect and integrate the site’s environmental and cultural values, with green spaces and open areas designed to connect people with the natural landscape.

The design will seek to respond to feedback gathered through this phase of community engagement.

Planning for Ginninderra East has been informed by community engagement, technical studies and strategic planning undertaken since 2015. This has included community drop-in sessions, stakeholder discussions and consultation with nearby residents, community groups and government agencies. More recently, a community needs study explored the future social infrastructure needs of the area, including community facilities, recreation opportunities, schools, open space and local services.

Key themes from previous engagement included protecting the natural environment, providing quality parks and recreation spaces, improving walking, cycling and transport connections, supporting a mix of housing, and delivering community facilities and local services. Participants also highlighted the importance of creating a place with a strong local identity that connects well with surrounding neighbourhoods.

This feedback will continue to inform planning for Ginninderra East.

Your feedback will directly inform the preparation of the Major Plan Amendment for Ginninderra East. In particular, we are seeking community perspectives on matters that may influence the proposed planning framework, including parks and recreation, nature, movement and connections, community life, local services and the future role of the former Ginninderra Police Station precinct.

Feedback will also help shape the Ginninderra East Place Ambition and guide subsequent planning and design. A Listening Report will explain what we heard and how the feedback will be considered as the MPA is prepared.
