Reserves in North Canberra Receive Ngunnawal Names

16 November 2021

Two reserves in north Canberra have been named using Ngunnawal words to honour their rich environmental and cultural heritage.

The Franklin Grasslands (at the north west corner of Wells Station Drive and Flemington Road) has been renamed as Budjan Galindji Grasslands Nature Reserve. Budjan Galindji is from the Ngunnawal language and translates into English as ‘water bird’.

This name recognises the Latham’s Snipe which migrates to the ACT region from the northern hemisphere every year. See the naming determination here. You can also check out the Franklin Grasslands Landscape Plan for more information about the Reserve, and the surrounding Grasslands.

An area of grassland in Gungahlin (just south of the suburb of Harrison, in the future suburb of 'Kenny') has also been named using Ngunnawal language. The site, which runs along most of the eastern edge of Old Wells Station Road, is named Nadjung Mada which translates into English as 'wet land'. See the naming determination here.
