Help shape the future of free period products

As part of the ACT Government’s commitment to health equity and gender inclusion, free period products are now available in a growing number of public spaces — including schools, libraries, courts, public health centres, community organisations, and selected government buildings.

This initiative supports the Period Products and Facilities (Access) Act 2023 and aims to reduce period poverty, break down stigma, and ensure that women, girls, and gender-diverse people can access what they need, when they need it.

We’re now seeking community feedback to help us evaluate how the project is working and guide future planning.

How to have your say

There are three easy ways you can share your feedback on the Free Period Products Project:

  1. Complete a short survey to help us understand what’s working well and what could be improved.
  2. Share a quick comment about your experience or what you’d like to see in the future.
  3. Place a marker on our interactive map to suggest a location where you think free period products should be available.

The impact of having your say

Your feedback is essential to the future of free period products in the ACT.

By sharing your experiences, you’re helping us understand what’s working, where improvements are needed, and how we can better support people across Canberra. Your input will directly inform decisions about how the initiative is delivered—including potential new locations, improved access to products and information, and clearer communication.

This engagement will also contribute to the evaluation of the pilot project and help shape a business case for additional funding as part of the 2026–27 Budget.

Together, we can ensure this initiative continues to support dignity, health, and inclusion for everyone in our community.

Background information

Menstruation affects many people in our community, yet access to period products is not always guaranteed. Lack of access can lead to missed school, work, and social participation — contributing to broader issues of inequality and exclusion.

The ACT Government launched the Free Period Products Project to reduce period poverty and promote menstrual health. Free products are now available in a growing number of public spaces across the ACT, supported by inclusive, age-appropriate information.

The project is underpinned by the Period Products and Facilities (Access) Act 2023, which requires the ACT Government to provide free period products and accessible menstrual health education.

Research and engagement with community organisations have shown that period poverty disproportionately affects young people, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, and those experiencing financial hardship. Feedback from events like SpringOUT Fair and internal ACT Government surveys has also highlighted the importance of respectful, inclusive, and visually clear communication to ensure the initiative reaches and resonates with all members of the community.
