How you had YourSay:
Thanks for having your say on the design of the Stromlo Pool facility to be built at Stromlo Forest Park.
Throughout the eight week community engagement process in December 2016 and January 2017, 705 submissions were received and 10 meetings held with key sporting and community groups.
The most popular components requested by the community include:
- A gym/health club
- A splash park
- Modifications to the program pool to accommodate young children and hydrotherapy
- More seating
A splash park was the most popular answer to which extra facility you’d like to see, with a gym/health club receiving the most first preference votes in the YourSay survey and the second highest number of votes overall.
What we looked at:
The Stromlo Leisure Centre will be an important asset for the growing Weston Creek and Molonglo communities, and is a welcome addition to the ACT Government’s aquatic facilities in Dickson, Manuka, Civic, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin.
The centre is part of the Stromlo Forest Park Master Plan, which is already seeing this beautiful part of Canberra become a thriving sport and recreation precinct.
Stromlo Forest Park boasts world-class mountain bike trails, a criterium circuit, running track, equestrian trails, spectator stands and parts of the container village that have been relocated from West Basin.
Facilities like this are so important for bringing active communities together especially in an area like this with lots of young families.
How we used your views:
The ACT Government initially committed $33 million for the project to include a 50 metre lap and competition pool, a program pool for activities like swimming lessons and aqua aerobics, a reception, kiosk, administration offices and change rooms.
After considering your feedback, the ACT Government has now allocated an additional $3.6 million funding for a gym, leisure pool, toddlers’ pool, splash park, crèche and more seating throughout the centre to ensure the facility meets the needs of this growing area.
