Background

Many Canberrans live in multi-unit apartments and rely on gas for hot water, cooking and heating. The pathway to electrifying these buildings is complex, but will have impacts on reducing emissions, lowering utility costs and increased energy efficiency on a large scale.

Ensuring there is a pathway to electrify these buildings will be important for IEP 1, so that green finance (a loan or investment that promotes environmentally-positive activities) can be accessed to help fund the transition.

Time is needed to better understand and build capability in the technology and workforce needed to support electrification of these complex buildings, including for things like increased demand for electric vehicle charging stations.

For new developments, the ACT Government is ensuring they will be built all-electric by introducing a regulation to prevent new gas network connections in late 2023.

More information on this focus area can be found in the Position Paper on pages 26-27.

Consultation questions:

Some key questions you may wish to consider include:

  • How can government work with industry and financiers (such as green finance and investors) to electrify complex buildings?
  • How can government work with community and community organisations to ensure a smooth transition for those living in complex buildings?
  • What should be the role of body corporates in preparing for the transition?

How much extra will this cost tenants in rent increases? Real estate agents use any excuse they can to put the rent up, rational or not.
