Background

The first IEP will focus on continuing to support a consumer-led transition away from fossil fuel energy. Many households are already choosing to make energy efficient upgrades, switching to electric vehicles and installing rooftop solar.

The ACT Government will continue to support and encourage these choices with a range of schemes and rebates, and ongoing education. For more information about what support might be available for your household, visit climatechoices.act.gov.au

Households without the means to transition, particularly those with low incomes, will need support to take part in Canberra’s energy transition. Assisting those who cannot transition themselves is proposed as the highest priority area for action out to 2030.

More information on the ACT Government’s proposed approach can be found in the Position Paper on pages 20-25.

Consultation questions

Some key questions you may wish to consider include:

  • What can be done to further encourage electrification among those households that have the means to do so?
  • Is there a role for regulation to support better information for consumers when choosing between gas and electric appliances?
  • How can we best support groups who will find it difficult to transition, such as low-income households and renters?
  • What are the barriers to uptake of consumer energy resources and other technology, such as batteries, solar panels and electric vehicles?

AD says:

A lot of cost into gas transition when Canberra has such a small GHG footprint. Find ways to offset or sell green energy to others first.

Sue says:

Leave our gas stoves alone. We need a way to cook when the electricity's out. It affects the flavour of food, too.

Geoff of Hackett says:

I strongly support the IEP prioritising a fair & equitable transition. It'd be great if it included indicators to monitor progress on this.

JC says:

Don't forget the people who are in apartments, strata managed townhouses who don't have easy access to solar. We're missing out !

16 August, 2023

FedUpWithBadAir says:

We absolutely need to transition away from fossil-fuel energy, but we should phase out wood burning first because it's so much worse.

15 August, 2023

reynoldd says:

Nearly $1000 dollar fee for gas disconnection to a home is a massive disincentive to switch off gas.

7 August, 2023

Rad says:

What about the double glazing and the additional insulation needed to make electric heating as effective as gas in all of the older homes?

4 August, 2023

New home owner says:

Provide rebates or refunds for old gas appliances to encourage replacement when they are near end of life so materials can be recycled.

4 August, 2023

mark says:

Ten years ago we got a gov't rebate to switching from wood to gas. All our appliances now gas. Where will we get the $ to go electric?

3 August, 2023

Steve says:

Don’t phase out reliable existing energy sources for unreliable, expensive new technologies that cannot meet the demands of our community

3 August, 2023

Shawn says:

Decommissioning Gas after you give me a 5k subsidy to install Gas ducted only 4 years ago? Makes no sense. Longer transition time needed

1 August, 2023

Dan says:

People need fast installation. It’s quick to replace a broken appliance with the same type, some people have no choice when there’s no time.
