As Canberra grows, the ACT Government is supporting sustainable urban renewal that enhances the qualities we value in our capital. In the 2021-22 ACT Budget, funding was provided to begin construction for upgrades at three local Canberra shops – Campbell, Duffy and Kaleen South.

Upgrades to local shopping centres will help to revitalise and improve access around the centres, encourage people to shop locally, encourage new tenants to occupy vacant shops and support the changing needs of the community.

The local shops on the corner of Alberga Street and Maribyrnong Avenue (Gwydir Square) in Kaleen South were constructed in the early-1970s. Since then, the expectations and needs of the local community have changed and the area is in need of improvements.

Early consultation undertaken in 2017 with local stakeholders, including the businesses at the time, told us that there were concerns around lighting and safety, parking restraints and landscaping, as well as a need to improve active travel infrastructure and provide safer pedestrian access. Following these conversations, preliminary designs were prepared which propose a range of upgrades to improve the safety, accessibility and look and feel of each of the locations.

How you had YourSay:

The final designs are available below for you to view.

We looked at:

In early 2021 we asked the local community and stakeholders what improvements they would like to see at these local shops.

We held a conversation online, face to face and directly with stakeholders from 22 March to 10 May 2021. The community’s feedback was captured through YourSay, a drop-in session and written submission.

Community feedback told us you would like to see:

  • better amenities and opportunities for community artwork
  • improved landscaping and increased shade
  • a new public toilet.

We used your views to:

Key insights from the community have shaped the final designs and will help revitalise the local shops and encourage the community to support local business. Improvements we are delivering include:

  • more carparking spaces
  • a new toilet
  • new seating and shade structures
  • better landscaping, including smaller plantings and natives
  • upgraded lighting and more.
