Overview of options

Please read the summaries below, view the plans for each and provide comment in the feedback box provided.

After considering a range of Master Plan options the ACT Health Directorate is consulting on two options that are achievable and allow all aspects of clinical services to remain operational through development.

Both options provide a more accessible and efficient campus with increased parking volume and improved parking locations including underground parking, direct access from Yamba Drive to the Emergency Department, more open green space, and more connected clinical services for improved health care efficiency and outcomes. Both options provide for growth of the campus to meet our demand over the coming years.

As two options they highlight alternative Master Plan features to the community. We do not need to pick one option over the other – it may be that different features from each option are used to develop the final Master Plan.

What do the options have in common?

The options also have some design features in common such as roof-top open spaces/gardens, retail and food options, and the development of purpose-built precincts. Both options provide for a new teaching, training and research precinct so we can continue to deliver high quality healthcare with our tertiary partners.

Informed by community feedback

Master Plan options were developed and informed by feedback from Phase 1 of the community and stakeholder feedback program held February-March 2021. The Master Plan options also take into consideration other inputs including:

  • Results and data from recent work undertaken for Territory-wide Health Services Planning and Clinical Services Planning
  • Canberra Hospital Asset Assessment (review of existing buildings on the campus and their lifespans)

The options also reflect and address feedback themes from Phase 1 consultation. Although some feedback may not be immediately addressed in the Master Plan—as the nature of that feedback goes to detailed design, which is beyond the scope of a high-level Master Plan - the Master Plan options make provision for that feedback to be considered in future design.

Option 1

Option 1 Summary

Option 1 provides a connected design co-locating the core clinical health services the hospital provides in the North of the campus. It has:

  • a large-scale central open space at the centre of the campus
  • a standalone logistics centre (for the movement of medical supplies, waste, laundry, food, and more) with dedicated logistics traffic access, and
  • makes is easy to get around using an efficient internal loop road network and pedestrian paths.

Option 2

Option 2 Summary

Option 2 also provides ample space for long-term future expansion. In comparison to Option 1, Option 2 has:

  • a smaller central open space and an additional large open space providing another open space to the north of the main clinical services tower.
  • The location of the new logistics centre is underneath the new central open space which would occupy some of the potential underground parking space in that location.
  • The logistics centre is accessed via Yamba Drive and does not have its own designated access road and therefore logistics traffic crosses the newly formed north-south through-road from Kitchener Street to Bateson Road and into Yamba Drive.
  • As the new clinical services building and the Centenary Hospital for Women and Children are separated by an open green space these buildings would be connected by overhead walkways and underground tunnels.
