About the project

Over the next two decades, the City Centre is changing shape with Light Rail Stage 2A, new offices and cultural spaces, and thousands more residents, workers and students. As our centre evolves, community insights are guiding the long-term vision for the area.

We previously held the 2024 City Hill ideas exhibition to gather community ideas on how to make City Hill park a highly valued natural space in our City Centre. We wanted to better understand your views about City Hill and how it could serve our growing City Centre, while also honouring the site’s historical significance.

The public survey saw 600 written and 69 visual submissions, which are now featured in an online gallery.

City Hill park - concept masterplan

We are building on the 2024 City Hill Ideas Exhibition to develop a concept masterplan design for City Hill park. Balancing City Hill park’s role as a green space, a civic landmark and an integral public place in Canberra’s City Centre, the concept masterplan will support a more contemporary, welcoming, accessible and well‑loved green space, fit for the future.

A revitalised City Hill park will become a central green anchor that connects our developing City Centre.

How to get involved

We are forming a People’s Panel — a group of around 30 community members who will explore ideas, weigh up opportunities and help shape the future of City Hill park.

The Panel will reflect the diversity of the Canberran community and place community voices at the heart of this major city‑shaping process. Together, members will learn from experts, develop a shared vision and guiding principles, and provide thoughtful advice on concept design options.

Find out more and register your interest to join the People’s Panel through an Expression of Interest.

Background

City Hill park sits at the northern apex of the Parliamentary Triangle, forming the symbolic and geographical centre of the city. Encircled by the fast flow of traffic around Vernon Circle, the five-hectare green park became a place to drive past, rather than visit.

As the City changes shape with Light Rail Stage 2A, new workplaces and cultural spaces, and thousands more residents, workers and students, City Hill park will be surrounded by people.

The ACT Government is embarking on an ambitious journey to reimagine this iconic space through the City Hill park concept masterplan. This long‑term plan will explore how City Hill park can become a more contemporary, welcoming, accessible and well‑loved green space as the city continues to evolve.

We are building on what we heard in 2024 through the City Renewal Authority’s Ideas Exhibition. Then, more than 650 people contributed feedback for how City Hill park could become a valued green space to serve our growing City Centre.
