Project status: In progress
How you had YourSay
In November and December of 2023, you were invited to have your say on a proposed upgrade to the intersection of Elouera and Mort Streets in Braddon.
The upgrade includes major improvements to pedestrian safety and connectivity as part of the wider Braddon streetscape upgrades underway by the City Renewal Authority.
The design concept includes:
- replacement of the roundabout with a raised intersection that calms traffic
- introduction of zebra crossings, and
- installation of new lighting and garden beds.
Upgrades to Braddon’s streetscapes are part of the ACT Government’s initiative to renew and revitalise Canberra’s City Centre to adapt to long-term liveability and address the needs of an evolving population.
The City Renewal Authority is working with the Canberra community to build a city precinct that promotes sustainability, supports easy access, celebrates diversity, supports small businesses, and creates attractive spaces that people want to visit.
We’ve incorporated these community priorities and aspirations into the concept design for the Elouera and Mort Streets intersection upgrade.
The upgrade aims to:
- improve pedestrian access and connectivity
- improve safety for pedestrians
- make it easier to walk between Braddon and the Elouera Street light rail stop
- slow vehicles travelling along Elouera and Mort Streets.
The proposed design also considers the draft best practices for urban intersections and other active travel infrastructure in the ACT.
Construction is expected to commence in March 2024.
Previous feedback
In 2021, community consultation was undertaken on designs for the Lonsdale Street streetscape upgrade. The community also provided feedback and suggestions about Elouera and Mort Streets. Community feedback and insights reinforced the key priorities for streetscape upgrades in Braddon to improve connections, slow vehicles and improve pedestrian safety.
This community feedback guided the proposed design of the Elouera and Mort Streets intersection upgrade, which was shared with community during public consultation from 3 November 2023 – 15 December 2023 and features:
- zebra crossings for pedestrian convenience and safety
- a slow vehicle environment
- lighting upgrades for night-time safety
- improved connections to light rail
- increased tree and groundcover planting.
We will use your feedback to understand any unforeseen issues with this design. We will refine the design, if possible, in relation to technical requirements and budget.
We invite you to subscribe for notifications to continue your involvement as the project progresses.
