Better City Streets

About the project

Everyone is a pedestrian at some stage of their journey. So, everyone benefits from better city streets.

The City Renewal Authority is making streets more pedestrian-friendly throughout the City Centre, Braddon and Dickson.

We are seeking your feedback on plans to make it easier to move around, come together, shop and have fun across four locations in the city centre.

With your help, the proposed upgrades will create even more thriving community, cultural and commercial hubs.

Depending on the location, improvements may include:

  • Wider pavements to reduce congestion and improve safety.
  • Improved lighting for enhanced visibility at night.
  • Green spaces and trees to provide shade, reduce urban heat, and improve air quality.
  • Street furniture to offer places to come together and rest
  • Better pedestrian crossings for safer and more convenient movement
  • Outdoor dining areas to support local cafes, bars and restaurants.
  • Accessible design to ensure everyone is welcome.
  • Links to public transport for easy access to buses and light rail.

By investing in pedestrian infrastructure, we can balance the needs of all users to create more sustainable, accessible, healthy and enjoyable public spaces for all.

Key locations

  • Alinga Street west, Cooyong Street and City Walk

  • Dickson Group Centre

Benefits of pedestrian-friendly streets

  • Safety benefits: By using features like lighting and street crossings to prioritise pedestrian safety, particularly vulnerable pedestrians.
  • Economic benefits: By attracting visitors and investment, boosting local businesses.
  • Environmental benefits: By reducing the heat island effect and promoting sustainable water management practices.

How to have your say

The City Renewal Authority is working on a range of streetscape upgrades throughout the City Centre and Dickson over the coming years.
