Overview

Following consultation, we have published the Dickson Streetscapes Concept Masterplan.

More information about the project is available on the City Renewal website.

Thank you for taking part in the Better City Streets consultation for the Dickson Streetscapes Concept Masterplan. Your contribution, along with more than 1,000 pieces of feedback from residents, businesses, property owners and managers, played a central role in shaping the final plan. Your insights helped us better understand how people use Dickson’s streets, how they move through the centre, and what improvements would support a safer, greener and more accessible environment for the community.

City Renewal sought your ideas and input on a draft concept masterplan outlining future public space upgrades in the Dickson centre.

A concept master plan is a high-level plan for the future. It helps us know what to do and when to do it, so we can grow and improve the area.

The concept masterplan identifies future improvements to Challis Street, Antill Street (minor), Woolley Street, Cape Street, Badham Street and Dickson Place. It also defines the character of the streets and identifies design principles and materials.

What we heard

Through consultation, we heard strong themes around:

  • walkability and safer pedestrian crossings
  • cycling safety and improved routes
  • increasing tree canopy and shade
  • parking needs and short‑stay access
  • business servicing and loading requirements
  • higher quality public spaces and amenity.

Building on the Dickson Place Plan, the concept masterplan will establish a clear and inspiring vision for future development, ensuring that it aligns with the overarching goals and aspirations of the community.

Whilst the Dickson Group Centre is undergoing significant transformation, it remains a vital part of Canberra's heritage and a hub of diversity, commerce, and community.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed their ideas, experiences and perspectives. Your input has helped shape a plan that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Dickson community.

Background

The Dickson Group Centre is one of Canberra’s oldest shopping and dining areas. The central community meeting place comprises a diverse range of public spaces, including:

  • The family-friendly Dickson shops
  • The thriving Woolley Street's Eat Street
  • The commercial business hub along Challis Street and Northbourne Avenue
  • The surrounding tree-lined residential neighbourhood.

The concept masterplan will enhance these spaces, supporting Dickson’s rapidly growing residential and employment population, as well as complementing private investment in the area.

Our renewal of Dickson is being guided by the local community to make sure it remains a unique and much-loved public space. This includes supporting dining, shopping and other business activities.
