The Molonglo Valley on Ngunnawal Country will be home to nearly 70,000 people by 2050. The town centre will be at the heart of a new suburb called ‘Molonglo’ spanning over 97 hectares and stretching 5 kilometres along the Molonglo River.
The development will be a long-term project which will be constructed over many years. The future town centre will be the primary commercial centre for the community, a place where people live, gather, shop, and enjoy life.
The Molonglo Town Centre and Surrounds Master Plan was released in May 2026, establishing the long-term vision for Canberra's newest town centre.
With the project progressing, we are now focusing on the next stage of planning Molonglo 2, part of the Eco-Urban Village sub-precinct.
Molonglo Town Centre will be delivered progressively over many years through a series of development stages which are anticipated to go from south to north. With the first stage, Molonglo 1 being released to market as an englobo land parcel, work is now underway on Molonglo 2 which will establish early homes, open spaces and associated infrastructure.
Staging development allows homes, parks, infrastructure and community facilities to be delivered in step with population growth, helping to create a vibrant and connected town centre over time.

Located on Ngunnawal Country on the western edge of the ACT, south of Belconnen and to the north of Weston Creek, the Molonglo Town Centre (formerly referred to as the Molonglo Group Centre) is nestled close to the beautiful Molonglo River and the suburb of Denman Prospect. It will be the fifth suburb within the Molonglo Valley and will become the new suburb named simply “Molonglo” across 97 hectares.
ACT Government has engaged with Canberrans on Molonglo since 2004, through the Canberra Spatial Plan, 2014 Group Centre concepts, the 2022 Concept Plan, the 2023 District Strategy, the new ACT Planning System and the Molonglo Valley Community Needs Assessment. Community feedback also informed the uplift from Group Centre to Town Centre and the MTC Masterplan.
Key planning frameworks include the 2008 Territory Plan and Molonglo Valley District Policy, the 2008 Molonglo and North Weston Structure Plan (establishing North Weston, Coombs, Wright, Denman Prospect and Whitlam), and the 2011 Strategic Assessment. The 2021 Draft Concept Plan was shaped by whole‑of‑government strategies such as the ACT Planning Strategy, Transport Strategy and Climate Change Strategy.
In 2023, the interim new Territory Plan introduced an outcomes‑based system, new legislation, District Strategies and Design Guides, including a high‑level Molonglo Valley District Strategy. SLA also began First Nations engagement to develop a Connecting with Country Framework.
The Molonglo Group Centre was formally upgraded to a Town Centre in 2024. Between late 2024 and early 2025, SLA ran extensive community, First Nations and Community Panel engagement to develop the Community Vision, summarised in the Listening Report.
Community input continues to shape the Molonglo Town Centre and Surrounds Master Plan as the project moves into staged subdivision design.
Community feedback helped shape the Community Vision and informed the Molonglo Town Centre and Surrounds Master Plan. Feedback has been captured in Listening Reports, which are available in the document library.
The themes and priorities identified through engagement continue to inform subdivision design and planning work as the area takes shape into the future. The Master Plan anchors these conversations.
Current stakeholder consultation will help to refine the plans for Molonglo 2.
